Comb Honey is honey still in the comb. It is specially produced by beekeepers for the purpose of consumption while the honey is still in the honeycomb. The honeycomb should be fresh and clean, with white wax capping over the comb. However sometimes the capping may appear dark due to the type of honey inside, or the way the bees store the honey inside.
Comb Honey was the primary method of consuming honey before the early to mid 1900's. It was a favorite treat for those who liked honey. Ask anyone who was born in the 1950's or earlier, and they can usually recall purchasing Comb Honey in stores as children.
It is now very rare to find Comb Honey in any store. However thanks to farmer's markets, Comb Honey is beginning to become a popular treat again.
Many customers have asked me if the comb is edible. Many people do eat the wax comb as well as the honey. Some chew it until the honey is gone, then spit out the remaining wax. Some even chew the wax as if it were bubble gum after consuming the honey inside. |
